31 Songs in 31 Days Challenge, Day 20: Song From When You Were 19 #music @U2

It’s September, the start of a new month. Well, in mid-August, half a month too late, I came across one of those internet challenges. Being a music nut, I’m willing to take my chances with the data mining assholes and participate. For the month of September (plus October 1), I’m going to answer each of these with a blog post. Here’s the challenge:

Day 20: Song From When You Were 19

I turned 19 on May 17, 1987. This was the number one song. The song went to number one on May 16th, 1987, and stayed at the top of the charts for 3 weeks.

Have at it, data miners!

Day 19: Favorite Rap Song

Easy choice on this one.

I know, I know. Typical suburban white boy answer. At least it isn’t the Beastie Boys.

How trite would that be?

Day 18: Favorite Disco Song

Oh, yeah. Disco isn’t as bad as everyone says it is. While I’m not a dancer, there isn’t much music better suited for the modern dance floor, even though Disco “died” about 45 years ago. Here’s one from my 1st Edition AD&D playlist, which means it tugs at my memberberries. It’s as good a choice as any for this post.

I was so happy when I was allowed to buy this album.

Day 17: Song with Soul

Here’s a song from what I suspect is a horribly underrated artist. I was keyed into this song and artist when Guitar Magazine published sheet music for the song.

I wish I could say I ever had enough soul to do it justice, but I bet Robert would say, “Just do what you can and have fun with it.” He’s one cool cat.

Oooooo!!! Caturday reference!

Day 16: Song That Fires You Up

Whether I’m at the gym, at the dojo, or just in a particular mood, this one always fires me up.

This is also my favorite Metallica song.

Day 15: Favorite Spanish Song

I don’t have a favorite “Spanish” song, but this is my favorite “Spanish language” song, which has Mexican roots. I was first introduced to it while dining at the Alamo in Riverdale, MD before heading out to Arena Stage for a play. It was a regular stop for us on the rare occasions we went out to dinner, especially before going to Arena.

I will say that I have great love for Los Lobos’ version of La Bamba.

My dad occasionally sang La Cucaracha to us ever since that night.

This song is more about hoping for a return.

This could have qualified for day 21, but I have other plans for that.

Day 13: Song About Falling

Maybe this is a cheat of sorts, but I don’t want to risk leaving Toad the Wet Sprocket off this list. Here’s a song that at least involves a significant fall. Bradley falls off a ladder and breaks his leg, which never quite heals correctly. That’s close enough for me.

Sorry, but I was never a fan of Fall Down, though Dulcinea is one of my favorite albums.

Day 12: A Summertime Song

Oh, I’m definitely breaking the rules on this post. I’m giving you two songs. The first, because it’s easily the answer, and the second because one of the few celebrity deaths that truly bothered me happened recently.

I never listen to this song outside of summer. For some reason, it’s the summertime song for me based solely on how the music makes me feel. The lyrics are obviously irrelevant.

And now for number two. I know it’s problematic. At the moment, I don’t care.

I’m actually an agnostic.

Day 11: Favorite Song from the 90s

Soundtracks became a huge thing for me in the 90s, so much so that I actually prefer 90s music to 80s music.

This is probably my favorite work of the 90s.

This could also have easily qualified for day 6, but I’m happy with that choice.
